About

I am a 1974 Graduate of Gray New Gloucester High School, and a 1979 graduate from the School of Forest Resources with a BS in Forest Management. Employed by the Department of Conservation from 1981 to 1985, I served in several capacities, including Maine Forest Service forest technician, Public Lands forest technician, Maine Forest Service Utilization Forester, and Service Forester. Hancock Lumber of Casco hired me in 1985 to manage their 12,000 acres of forest land and buy white pine sawlogs for their Casco and Pittsfield sawmills. In 1990, Lavalley Lumber of Sanford hired me to buy logs for their Sanford saw mill. In 1993, I became a consulting forester offering professional forestry services to private forest land owners. My dad, also a forester, and I incorporated our consulting firm, Timberstate G. Now owned solely by myself, I have one employee.

Divorced in 2014, I am single and have one daughter who is now doing her Residency for Doctor at Central Maine Medical Center. Although very handy to 90 years of age, both of my parents are still very active with family and are still living in their Gray Maine home. My three brothers, their families, myself and my daughter remain close to my parents, often getting together for family events.

This spring, I completed the making of about 9 gallons of maple syrup, utilizing a low tech back yard manufacturing system. Since high school, I have done this nearly every year. Having a mechanical mind, I have an interest in machinery, particularly antique trucks, tractors and cars. Owning several antique trucks and tractors, I get to spend time keeping them running and driving them in parades or just around town. In addition to managing forests for other landowners, my family and I also manage our own family forest land, harvesting our timber using our family skidder. Foresters are not loggers, except on weekends! Our family forest properties are exemplary.

World’s Greatest Dad

Growing up an only child, I was left with my own imagination and many toys to keep my mind preoccupied. Both of my parents had careers and strived to give me the best life they possibly could. They sent me to a small Christian school until Junior High, where good characteristics were not only taught but enforced.  My home in rural Maine has been the same since the day I was brought home from the hospital. It is a nice house that my father built. My father, a humble, small town man with vast amounts of knowledge hidden behind his old clothes and crooked smile, has been the source of my high moral standings and ambitious personality. He may not be able to recite a poem by Maya Angelo or tell the function of the ribosomes in a prokaryotic cell, but he can create and build a barn or house with his own hands and fix practically anything. In fact he already has. His involvement in our church has inspired me to lead my youth group peers in worship, teach children’s church, and volunteer in the nursery.  His willingness to help those in need with his acquired skills has motivated me to join our school’s community service club and lead projects to help those who are less fortunate. An active member in our towns planning board and interest in the nation’s politics, my father has instilled me with the power to stand for what I believe and debate my ideas instead of fading out and not expressing my opinions. The knowledge and enjoyment my father receives from his profession has created a desire in me to pursue my dreams and discover opportunities that will challenge my knowledge in subjects I enjoy.

I was once told that the role of a father in one’s life may in fact be the greatest impact on the character of a person. If this is true then I should have no worries. Each value, moral, and ethical opinion that I employ has contributed to the example he has established for himself, me and others. These are immoveable standards set in a solid foundation not exempt from a kind heart toward humanity. He taught me how to drive a standard, drive a tractor, duck hunt, plumb a bathroom, and replace light fixtures. He taught me how a five speed non synchromesh transmission runs as well as what it means to go to church every Sunday. Through examples of his own life, I have learned patience, hard work, kindness, and humility; important characteristics for every person to own. Everything I stand for is tested and tried over and over and every time I am able to overcome life challenges by choosing a path along the high road. Because of my father’s interests and influences, I know more about car parts and songs form the 1970’s than most teenagers. My interest and involvement as an American citizen is rare because I care about issues that most people do not know exist.

I am a fortunate young women, who has a caring father with values, and teaches these through his own actions and choices. When it comes to education, I am book smart, but I also have much more in the way of wisdom and insight because of my father. He continues to iterate the importance of continuing education, and with this, I am looking forward to college. His support is certain. I will perform in my college and career, knowing that he is with me every step of the way. I look forward to making my own choices, knowing that my father and family are with me.

I wrote the above letter in 2011. Its purpose was to satisfy the requirements of a college application. To this day, my dad is unchanged in how he conducts his life.
